Denning:
Denning is a natural instinct and natural behavior of dogs.
Domestication of dogs is  a fairly recent event in the history of the canine and as a result the common dog still has some of the wild instincts.Canines have a natural instinct to hide out in dens. If there is not a bed made available then they will make their own. It is the dogs natural desire to have their own place , it may be under the table or a spot in the garden. When a dog has a cage or kennel available he will often seek this out when he is tired or stressed.

leave toys to play with or chew nearby.

Digging
Most of the behavior of dogs are either learned or instinct.
Of course there are certain breeds that were bread specifically for digging out animals such as badgers and foxes. These breeds include the terriers and dachsunds.

A dog who has been left for a long time will dig and this will be out of boredom. Always leave toys or chewy things to keep him occupied. If a dog sees that there is more to do on the other side he may dig to escape. In the case of an unneutered dog he may be digging to escape and mate with another dog. This is a very natural behavior of dogs

Dogs are also great at saving for a rainy day and will dig to bury bones for another time.

On a hot day a dog may dig to get to cooler soil below .

All of these digging behaviors are normal behavior of dogs and if they become unwanted behavior then the trick lies in understanding why the dog is doing this and taking action to manipulate it into a behavior of which we approve.
