Kennel Cough
Despite implications from its name, kennel cough can be contracted anywhere, not just in kennels. It is a condition caused by one or more of several agents-bacteris, virus and mycoplasma-spread by droplet and completely contagious. The cough is usually harsh as if something is stuck in the back of the throat. Sometimes there is also a clear watery discharge from the eyes and nose and the dog may appear to be a little fussy over food. Veterinary advice should be taken,as antibiotics may be needed to prevent secondary infection in the chest. A teaspoon of honey given at regular intervals will help soothe the throat, as will a spoonful of low fat vanilla ice-cream. Your dog will need to be kept away from other dogs while he is coughing and also two weeks following cessation of coughing as he could still be infectious. Your vet can advise you about vaccinating your dog against kennel cough. |
